[Class 47 (ii).] Relates to sprinkler systems of the kind wherein the distributing pipes B, Bl are normally filled with a non-freezing solution supplied under pressure by a tank T, and wherein a main water-supply valve is automatically opened when the solution supply becomes exhausted, and consists in providing a main valve casing -1 which comprises a chamber 2 and an auxiliary chamber 3 separated by a valve 17 which, when closed, holds the main water valve 10 closed by means of a lug 24. The water inlet 4 and auxiliary chamber 3 are connected by a pipe 25, so that byepassed water acts on the valve 17 to hold the water valve 10 closed. A drain pipe I from the auxiliary chamber 3 is larger than the byepass pipe 25, and is normally closed by a valve H, the latter being held closed by the solution pressure in tank T acting through the supply pipe D and connection F. When a sprinkler head C opens, solution flows out alone until the solution pressure falls to a point at which the valve H opens. This relieves the byepass pressure on the valve 17, allowing the main water valve 10 to open. The valve 10 is carried by a pivoted arm 12 and the valve 17 is counterweighted at 22 and comprises a resilient gasket 20 retained by a ring 21.
