Heated heavy oils are passed with hydrogen into a heat-insulated drum 11 packed with catalyst 12; the mixed liquid and vapour products are withdrawn through a cooler 4 and separator 15, and after passing a pressure-reducing valve 25 are PICT:0364403/III/1 fractionated in a tower 26. Heavy products are withdrawn from the system by a pipe 41; a fraction suitable for motor fuel is condensed by a cooler 37, and the middle fraction from the pan 30 is returned by pipe 31 to the heating coil 6.
