[Class 103 (i).] In an hydraulically operated brake having shoes 12 contacting with an external drum, wear of the shoes is compensated for by means of a pair of rods 15, which at their outer ends are jointed to the shoes, preferably by means of slots 17 coacting with studs 16 on the shoes to determine the normal clearance between the shoes and drum, and at their inner ends are provided with longer slots 18 through which passes a common spindle 19 fixed to the baseplate 11, the inner ends of the rods being pressed into frictional engagement by a spring 20 surrounding the spindle 19. In operation, when the brake shoes are applied, the studs 16 slide outwardly in the slots 17 and, if undue wear has occurred, they engage the outer edges of the slots and feed the rods 15 forwardly relatively to the spindle 19. On release of the braking force a spring 14 extending between the shoes withdraws the latter, and the studs 16 pass to the inner ends of the slots 17 where they are arrested, since the spring 14 is unable to overcome the frictional resistance between the rods 15. In a modification, the spring 14 is replaced by two springs each disposed between a shoe 12 and the rod 15 associated therewith.
