370,646. Driving drawing rollers of ring frames. SOC. ANON. OFFICINA MECCANICA ST. ANDREA-NOVARA, 18, Via Leonardo da Vinci, Novara, Italy. April 7, 1931, No. 10203. Convention date, April 10, 1930. [Class 120 (ii).] In continuous ring spinning or doubling machines, the drive is transmitted from the main shaft of the tin rollers to the drawing rollers through a chain 5 and a variable speed mechanism comprising two groups of stepped gears and associated movable gears combined in series, the number of speed changes obtainable being equal to the product of the speed changes which each group can make. In the embodiment shown, the drive is transmitted from the chain, preferably of the Galle roller type, to the first shaft 15 of the variable speed mechanism proper through gears 11 .. 14 of which the gears 11, 12 are mounted in a compartment on the outside of a casing 8 enclosing the gearing and can be changed to give a further number of transmission ratios. The first movable gear comprises a wheel 16 rotating with the shaft 15 along which it can be slid by means of an arm 18, this arm carrying a wheel 17 which meshes with the wheel 16 and any one of a series of stepped gears 19 according to the setting of the arm. The gear wheels 16, 17, 19 constitute one group of the variable speed mechanism and the second group 30, 31, 32 is similar, the wheel 30 rotating on and sliding along the shaft of the stepped gears 19. A drawing roller 29 is integral with an extension of the shaft on which the stepped gears 32 are keyed. The gears may work in an oil bath in the casing 8 which is situated above the headstock of the machine and is provided with a hinged cover.
