377,192. Controlling pumps. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, London, and DAVEY, S. C., The Willows, Dunton Green, Kent. April 15, 1931, Nos. 11197 and 22961. [Class 102 (i).] A water-service installation for railway etc; vehicles comprises an underframe reservoir, a motor-driven pump delivering water from the reservoir to a subsidiary vessel from which various service points are supplied, a non- return valve preventing back flow from the vessel, and a dual control for the motor, one element of the control being sensitive to the state of charge in the vessel and the other to the state of charge in the reservoir. In Fig. 1 an electrically-driven pump 5 delivers water from an underframe tank 1 past a non-return valve 10 to an air-pressure chamber 9 connected to service pipes 11 ; a pressure-responsive device 14 is connected to the chamber 9, or between this chamber and the valve 10, and a float device 32 is provided in the tank 1, the devices 14, 32, controlling switches 29, 33, Fig. 4, in the motor circuit. The opening of the switch 33 may be indicated by a pilot lamp 38. The pressure-responsive device 14 may comprise a bellows, Fig. 5, loaded by a spring 18 and connected by a rod 19 and link 20 with a rock arm 21 carrying a cam 22 acting against a spring-pressed bowl 23 on the switch arm 16 to effect snap opening and closing. If leakage of air causes the installation to become waterlogged, the device 14 starts the motor immediately a supply tap &c. is opened. A four-way valve may be provided for recharging the chamber 9 with air, or a float in the chamber may control an air fan &c. The chamber 9 may be replaced by a chamber 41. Fig. 8, with a spring or air-loaded piston 42 sealed by a rolling ring 45. In another form, Fig. 9, the chamber 9 and device 14 are replaced by an overhead tank 46, or two or more tanks connected by an equalizing pipe, and a float device 52, while in a further form, the two arrangements are combined, some of the service pipes being supplied from the chamber 9 and the rest from the tanks 46. The tank 1 may be replenished through a pipe 3, Fig. 1, or 31, Fig. 9, or through the overhead tanks. Specifications 16281/31 and 359,560, [Group XXI], are referred to.
