383,792. Cooling cylinders. STEVENS A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.- (Wright Aeronautical Corporation; Paterson, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 13, 1932, No. 1086. [Class 7 (ii).] A centrifugal blower for cooling air is arranged in the spinner of an aircraft propeller, the air being used either directly, or through a radiator. The spinner comprises a stream-lined casing 27 having an air entrance 30, reinforced by radial spokes, and a dished back-plate 24 having circumferential ports through which the air, rotated by the roots of the propeller blades, is forced on to curved guide vanes 20 arranged between radial cylinders of the engine. The spaces between adjacent cylinders are closed by baffles 34, which may be attached to the cylinder fins and extend behind individual cylinders, and the air finally issues, with engine exhaust from ports 16, through an annular opening between two fixed fairings 14, 17, a guide 18 being provided. The spinner may include helical blower vanes extending from the hub to the casing 27 and the plate 24 may be replaced by a transverse bar member having arcuate ends closing slots formed in the casing 27 for the propeller blades. Casings; cylinders, pipes for.-The sectioned engine cowling 14 is supported on a ring 21 having angle section and lugs 23 on an annular exhaust manifold having outlets 16 ; alternatively the fairing 14 may be formed in two hinged parts which are clamped together to embrace overhead valve-gear covers.
