384,468. Sliding jaw wrenches. IBBOTT, A. P., Aston, Sherwoods Road, Oxhey, Watford, Hertfordshire. Jan. 26, 1932, No. 2352. [Class 61 (iii).] The sliding-jaw member 16 of an adjustable spanner is moved into gripping engagement with the nut by a cam 17 having a smooth operative surface and pivoted to the shank 13 about midway thereof by a screw 18, a screw 16a on a lug 16b on the jaw member 16 engaging a flange 17a on the cam so that reverse movement of the cam moves the jaw member 16 backwards. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the movable jaw 25 is carried by a slide 23 movable up and down in an undercut guide 32 in the shank 27 by means of the pivoted cam 21 which is formed or provided with a knurled disc 30. Another modification shown in Fig. 6 comprises a flat plate 71 with jaw apertures 74, 75 at the ends and movable jaws 80, 81 on slides 82, 83 which are guided by flanges 88, 89 and actuated by the pivoted cam 78. In another construction, Fig. 8, the stem 45 of the movable jaw 48 slides in the tubular handle 41 and carries a pin 44 engaging a spiral groove 43 on the cam member 42 ; the jaws are shaped at 50 to engage the corners of nuts and at 49 to engage the corners of angular recesses. In a further modification shown in Fig. 9 a two-turn snail cam 56 is mounted for endwise movement on a fixed screw 54 to keep the operative part of the cam in alignment with the movable jaw stem 51. Fig. 10 shows a stepped cam 91 with the stops 92 merging gradually into one another at 95 and coacting with a shank 94 having rounded corners 97 at the end 96. For a wider range of adjustment the cam may be mounted on a screw adjustable slide member or on a slide adapted to be locked in a number of positions along the shank.
