396,265. Rotary kilns. COOYMANS, G., 8, Rue Louise, Antwerp, Belgium. Nov. 25, 1932, No. 33465. Convention date, Dec. 11, 1931. [Class 51 (ii).] In the wet process for the manufacture of cement &c. in a rotary kiln, rigid deflectors within the entrance end of the kiln are presented in succession to a jet or jets of slurry, which is broken up by the impact and dispersed through the heating-gases. The deflectors are preferably inclined so that the slurry rebounds upwards and is caught on hanging chains in the drying-zone. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the deflectors 5, 5a .. 5e are set on a curve corresponding with the temperature curve of the heating-gases, and at progressively increasing angles along the kiln, and the width of the deflectors also increases progressively towards the hottest part of the drying-zone, so that the quantity of slurry dispersed will be proportional to the temperature of the heating-gases. Alternatively the deflectors may be of uniform width but set at distances progressively decreasing towards the high temperature end. The deflectors in one row or series are preferably staggered in relation to those of the adjacent rows. The chains 2, 7 at the ends of the drying-zone are longer than the intermediate chains 4.
