Barium peroxide is reacted with phosphoric acid to produce hydrogen peroxide and di-barium phosphate and the di-barium phosphate obtained is then treated with such acids as are volatile and capable of forming soluble barium salts, e.g. hydrochloric or nitric acids, either in the gaseous state or as aqueous solutions, with the regeneration of the phosphoric acid. The regenerated phosphoric acid may be returned to the process. According to a modification, the di-barium phosphate is brought into solution by treatment with phosphoric acid, the solution is freed from insoluble impurities and is finally treated with acids of the kind referred to above. After the separation of the barium salts from the phosphoric acid, e.g. by cooling, it may be freed from the volatile acid by distillation. Hydrochloric acid is preferably employed in excess in order to effect a precipitation of barium chloride. After treating the di-barium phosphate with nitric acid and separating the deposited barium nitrate, the remaining phosphoric acid may be treated with sodium carbonate to precipitate the remaining barium present and the solution may be finally neutralized with further sodium carbonate to produce disodium phosphate which is separated by cooling.
