摘要
A size for textile fibres comprises polyvinyl alcohol and, if desired, known sizing agents such as oil, fat, or wax, and a sulphonated oil. The alcohol is applied at temperatures of 10 DEG to 90 DEG C. The material is freed from size by rinsing in hot water to which soap may be added, but can be dyed without previous removal of the size. In examples, cotton or woollen yarn is sized with a solution of polyvinyl alcohol in water in the proportion of 1 to 30, with or without the addition of 10 per cent, calculated on the alcohol, of a sulphonated oil. It is then squeezed uniformly and dried at about 45-50 DEG C. It may be treated in a dye-bath at a temperature of about 45 DEG C. slowly rising to about 80 DEG C., dyed with the usual admixture, rinsed, and dried. For artificial silk yarn a 1 in 50 solution of polyvinyl alcohol, with or without the sulphonated oil, is used, and a dye-bath at a temperature of about 40 DEG C. rising slowly to 60 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also sizing agents containing "compounds of high molecular weight of the type of polyvinyl alcohol" and polyvinyl ester. An organic solvent may be added to the sizing bath. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
