Improvements in the cleaning or scutching of flax, hemp, jute, ramie, and like fibre-bearing stalks

403,227. Scotching or cleaning flax, hemp, &c. GARDNER, F. P., 120, East 39th Street, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 23, 1932, No. 36508. [Class 120 (i).] Flax, hemp, jute, ramie, and like fibrebearing stalks are scutched and cleaned by subjecting the stalks to a series of alternate whipping or beating actions and uneven supporting actions, the stalks being supported on one side while being beaten or whipped on the other. The intensity of the action may be varied by feeding the stalks at a varying rate, by varying the distance between the beating and supporting members, or by varying the force, rate or number of the beating blows. The stalks 10 are fed through rollers 11, Fig. 1, and are beaten on opposite sides by drums 12, 12' having beater bars 15 of varying lengths, the stalks being cushioned or supported by flexible members 13 having slats 14 of different sizes to support the stalks unevenly. In a modification, the stalks may be fed horizontally over the supporting member 17, Fig. 2, while a stationary member 16 is provided in association with the beater 121 whereby a more severe action is obtained.
