Improvements relating to inclinometers particularly for use in aircraft

[Class 97 (ii).] A liquid-level inclinometer, particularly for use on aircraft for indicating pitching and rolling, comprises a U- tube system with two limbs in which the liquid levels are visible and a third invisible limb effective in a plane at an angle to the plane in which the U-tube system operates. In the form shown, the two visible limbs 1 are united at top and bottom by cross tubes 2 and the lower ends of the limbs 1 are connected by rearwardly extending tubes 3 to a chamber 4. An air tube 5 connects the top of the chamber 4 to the middle of the upper tube 2. Liquid fills the system till it is half-way up the limbs 1 when the instrument is level. The two tubes 3 may be replaced by a single tube and the limbs 1 and tubes 2 replaced by a circular tube which may surround the dial of a gyroscopic turn indicator or other instrument and be mounted therewith on the instrument panel. In a modification the limbs 1 are made of glass and the remainder of the instrument of metal. Damping means such as a constriction in one of the tubes may be provided. Fig. 3 shows how the limbs 1 may be formed to give a magnified indication at certain points.
