405,527. Furnace walls and roofs. OTTO & CO., GES. DR. C., 9, Christstrasse, Bochum, Germany. June 16,1933, No. 17233. Convention date, Jan. 14. [Class 51 (ii).] The masonry of industrial furnaces, particularly arches of Siemens-Martin furnaces, is constructed of bricks or blocks cemented together by mortar which, while having a chemical composition similar to that of the bricks, has a greater resistance to heat than either the bricks themselves or mortar having the same composition as the bricks. In the case of bricks consisting essentially of quartzite, the mortar is made from pure quartz sand, while with silica bricks, the mortar is made from the same raw material as the bricks with all softening constituents, e.g. alumina, removed except lime which serves for binding. A suitable composition for use with silica bricks is 30 parts of sand between 0.2 and 0.3 m.m. mesh, 70 parts of pulverulent quartz below 0.06 m.m. mesh, 4 parts of lime, and one-half part of sulphite cellulose waste liquor. The mortar joints have a minimum thickness of 3 m.m. and are preferably relatively thick, e.g. 10 m.m.
