[Class 117.] In the separation of coal, ores &c. which have previously been screened to substantially uniform sizes into flat and cubical shaped constituents A‹, B‹, Fig. 4, the materials are supported on a solid plate 1, Figs. 2 and 4, and caused to move thereover towards slots 10 formed between the support and guide plates 7 secured above it. The flat material escapes through the slots. In order to provide for continuous working, the support is slightly inclined longitudinally and is oscillated longitudinally or transversely or in both directions to promote the passage of the material towards the discharge end of the apparatus, and where necessary, the surface of the support may be cambered as shown at 4 to cause the materials to move towards the slots. Preferably the slots increase in width progressively from the feed end of the apparatus. The surface of the support is preferably extended beyond the guides as at 5, 6 to support the flat pieces temporarily after separation.
