413,880. Winding tuft-yarn spools for looms. HOMAN, R. W., Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Aug. 9, 1933, No. 22283. [Class 142 (iv).] The particular tuft yarns to be wound on each spool are selected by Jacquard or like mechanism and their ends brought into line ready for winding on the spool. As shown, the yarns 5 are passed through separate holes 6 arranged in horizontal rows in a vertical guide plate 7, yarns of each colour being in a separate row. The yarns then pass through holes 15 in separate blocks 12 which slide in front of the several rows of holes 6 on guide bars 10. Each yarn end is normally held in its block 12 by a catch 18. A series of rods 20 with pegs 31 for pushing the blocks 12 and with spring fingers 27 for pulling them back are connected to a vertical bar 22 secured to upper and lower racks 23 which gear with worms 110, 111 bevel geared to a vertical shaft 98. This shaft 98 through gearing 100, 101 also drives a U-shaped rack 73 the bevelled ends of which successively lift bars 42 provided with connected holes and slots 41 through which the lifting wires 40 of the Jacquard pass. The selected wires 40 lift pins 49 in the guides 10 just in front of the last blocks 12 in any row. Commencing with all the blocks 12 at the extreme left in Fig. 1, the sets of blocks 12 and the rack 73 are simultaneously moved to the right, the end block 12 in one or other row being stopped as each bar 42 is lifted depending on which wire 40 and which pin 49 have been selected. The blocks 12 with the selected threads then occupy some such positions as is shown in Fig. 1. The shaft 98 is then declutched from the motor 85 and a bar 112 with holes 121 for the yarns and entrance slots to these holes is lifted by cables and a hand crank 117 to collect all the selected yarns. As the bar 112 is lifted its flange 127 releases the catches 18 and the yarn is then gripped by catches 122 in the bar 112. After the selected yarns have been spooled, the bar 112 is lowered, the catches 18 being put into action again and the catches 122 thrown out. The blocks 12 are all moved to the extreme left (Fig. 1) again and another selection made. The quick motion of the blocks and the rack 73 to the left is effected through the gears 90, 93, 95, and the slow motion to the right through the gears 90, 91. The Jacquard cylinder 32 and the needle returning plate 36 are carried by bars 34 which are reciprocated by means of bell-crank levers 82, vertical bars 79, cams 76, and a clutch 86. The needles 37 selected press the corresponding wires 40 laterally into the narrow parts of the holes 41 in the lifting plates 42.
