An improved quick grip and quick release system of screws applicable to vices and other appliances

[Class 80 (iii).] Interrupted screw mechanism for vices &c. comprises, Fig. 1, a screw spindle 8 with interrupted threads 12 coacting with interrupted threads inside an intermediate nut 14 which has an outside continuous thread 17 engaging a continuous thread in a nut 18 fixed to the vice &c. body; nut 14 has at one end an enlargement 19 slotted at 20 to form dogs 21 coacting with dogs 23 on a dog carrier 22 rotating with nut slidable on the spindle 8, the enlargement 19 and dog carrier 22 being held together by a wire 24 located in grooves in dogs 21, 23. A pivoted catch 26 on enlargement 19 coacts with one of the dogs 23 so that when the spindle is turned back to release the work dog 23 drives catch 26 and with it enlargement 19 and nut 14 until a cam 29 on fixed nut 18 engages a cam 28 on catch 26 thereby releasing this catch whereupon continued backward movement of the screw spindle releases the interrupted threads 12. In a modification, Fig. 4, the screw spindle has a continuous thread engaging a continuous thread in an intermediate nut 14 having part rings 32 engaging part rings in the fixed nut 18 ; dogs 23 on a part rotating with the nut 14 coact with gaps 40 in the end of the fixed nut 18 and packing 38 causes friction between the spindle 8 and nut 14 ensuring rotation of the latter when the spindle is rotated prior to the final tightening. The interrupted screw threads may be left-handed and the continuous threads right-handed.
