The process described in the parent Specification in which 3 : 4 : 6-trichloro-2-amino-1-oxybenzene is converted into a 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrahalogen-2-amino-1-oxybenzene by treatment first with phosgene whereby the corresponding oxazolone is formed, followed by halogenation and saponification of the oxazolone ring is extended to the production of 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrahalogen-2-amino-1-oxybenzenes from any 2-amino-1-oxybenzenes which are substituted by chlorine or bromine at least in the 6-position. In examples: (1) 6-chloro-2-amino-1-oxybenzene is converted into 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-2-amino-1-oxybenzene; (2) 4 : 6 - dichloro - 2 - amino - 1 - oxybenzene is converted into 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrachloro-2 - amino - 1 - oxybenzene; (3) 4 : 6 - dichloro - 2 - amino - 1 - oxybenzene is converted into 4 : 6-dichloro - 3 : 5 - dibromo - 2 - amino - 1 - oxybenzene. The 4 : 6-dibromo-compound on bromination is converted into the corresponding tetrabromo derivative, but on chlorination a transfer of chlorine and bromine takes place to yield a mixture of substances which cannot be easily separated; (4) bromination of the 3 : 4 : 6-tribromo compound likewise yields a pure tetrabromo derivative, but on chlorination interchange of the halogen atoms occurs with the formation of a mixed product.
