429,605. Statistical apparatus. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd., Victoria House, Vernon Place, Southampton Row, London. Dec. 1, 1933, No. 33823. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1932. [Class 106 (i)] [See also Group VIII] Combined with punching-mechanism.-Statistical apparatus having two counters to receive an amount and its complement, record-card punching-mechanism and selecting means (62) which connects the counter carrying the direct amount to the punching-mechanism, is characterized in that if the amount is in one counter it is punched in a predetermined card field and if the amount is in the other counter it is punched in a second predetermined card field. The field corresponding to the complementary counter may be skipped past the punches or (switch 91 closed) zeros may be punched in it. The tabulator and punching - machine are coupled as in Specification 280,955, [Class 31 (ii)]. Each counter wheel is geared to a pair of brushes 57 in the known way so that one brush of a pair rests on that segment 58 corresponding to the digit on the counter wheel. The credit and debit counters are each of three denominations, but the debit has a fourth pair of brushes 57, geared to the fourth (highest) debit counter wheel and has only a 'nine' segment 58a. This is used to determine whether the debit counter carries the direct amount or its complement. In the latter case the fourth brush pin will stand on segment 58a. The card 19 is fed to the left by a spring barrel 42 step by step past a single column of punches 17. Each punch 17 is controlled by a magnet 10, leverage 11, 13, and interposer 15. When an interposer moves to the left it rocks a piece 21 to close contacts 23. This energizes the magnet 24 which, through linkage 25, 26, pulls down a bar 16. The latter, through the interposed end of bar 15, depresses the punch. The bar 15 also rocks parts 27, 28, 29 counterclockwise to actuate escapement mechanism whereby card carriage rack 35 slips one tooth to the left to present the next card column to the punches. At the same time a pair of brushes 46 on the carriage moves to the next fixed contact 48 coacting with contact bar 47, so that the punch magnet circuits are connected to the next denomination of the counter. Circuits.-If the debit counter carries a complement, a brush 57 is on segment 58a and a magnet 62 is energized to open contacts 62b, 62d and close contacts 62a, 62c. For the highest debit denomination a circuit S, 66, 65, 47, 46, 48, 67, 68, 69, 70, 62a, 71, 90, 36, 74, 24, 75, S is closed to energize magnet 24. No interposers are set to the left, Fig. 2, so that 16 descends idly and shaft 28 rocks to allow the card to escape left to the next column. This is repeated for all the debit denominations, but at the highest (left hand) credit denomination a circuit S, 66, 65, 47, 46, 48, 67, 68, 69, 70, 62c, 59, 57, 58, 80, 80, 81, S is formed to punch a hole in the card since the credit counter contains the direct amount. If the debit counter contains the direct number a circuit is not made at 58a, the contacts 62a ... 62b remain as shown and punching occurs for the debit counter since 62b are closed, but not for the credit since 62c are open. If switch 90 is opened and switch 91 closed then for the counter carrying the complement, instead of a circuit through 62a or 62b to lines 71, 73, 74 and magnet 24, the circuit passes over switch 91 to the " 0 " punch magnet 10 and a zero hole is thus punched in each denomination for the complementary field. By depressing a key 85, a relay 40 is energized which completely frees the escapement so that the carriage rack 35 moves fully to the left. Specification 418,067 also is referred to.
