422,706. Cycle driving mechanism. ALLEN, T., 22, Cambridge Road, King's Heath, Birmingham. July 17, 1933, No. 20107. [Class 136 (ii)] In coupling-rod driving mechanism for cycles of the pedal or motor-driven type, the lengths of the coupling-rods can be varied and the position of the crank-pin on the driven crank adjusted. The means for varying the lengths of the coupling-rods comprise a right- and lefthanded screw F which is turned to bring the two parts N and C of the rod closer together or further apart, and then is secured against further movement by a binding-screw O. The crank pins J on the driven cranks A lie in a curved slot concentric with the axle D, and can be held in any desired position in this slot by opposite lock-screws and a nut on the pin. The cranks A may be disposed at an angle of 150‹ to one another to avoid fouling of the coupling-rods C at dead-centre, the pedal cranks B being correspondingly off-set, but the pedals E being mounted in line 180‹ apart. The rotation of the cranks A is conveyed to the road-wheel by a multiplying sun-and-planet gear consisting of a stationary wheel G1 having internal teeth, with which mesh pinions G2 mounted on a disc fixed to the cranks A. The pinions G2 engage also the teeth of a wheel G3 fixed to the road-wheel, and may impart one or more speeds thereto. Ball-bearing brackets enable the road-wheel to be removed for repairs without affecting the coupling-rod adjustments.
