Process for extracting oleaginous materials that are rich in oil or otherwise unsuitable for treatment by ordinary methods of extraction

Fatty oils are extracted from raw materials containing a large amount of oil by submitting the material to a short preliminary extraction with a solvent to remove most of the oil and then extracting the remaining oil from the residue with a solvent by the usual methods. Crushed castor beans containing 44 to 48 per cent of oil are treated with a solvent which penetrates the material uniformly. After a short period of 5 to 30 minutes the extract is drawn off, and if necessary a further extraction made, until about 60 per cent of the oil is removed. The residue is then treated with a solvent in continuous circulation. The extraction vessel is preferably provided with two independent sets of conduits for solvent and extract formed at each stage, and the separate extracts are distilled with steam to yield the respective oils. The process may also be applied to the treatment of bleaching earths used in the purification of oils.
