[Class 39 (i)] Electrodes comprising or combined with one or more plates with guiding holes at a standard distance apart are formed into a single structural unit on a temporary rotatable support and this unit is removed from the support and mounted, together with other units or electrodes, on glass or other insulating rods 2, Fig. 1, which extend from the base 1 of the tube and engage the guiding holes to align the unit correctly. A Wehnelt cylinder 3 in a plate 31, a first anode 4, an after-concentration cylinder 5 in a plate 51 and a main anode 6 are assembled on a temporary support 27, Fig. 14, with interposed distance pieces 31 and are clamped together. A central rod 33 with cylinders to engage the parts 3, 5 is used to indicate, by eccentric movement on rotation of the support 27, if the electrodes are not properly centred, The electrodes are then secured together whilst on the support 27 by means of insulating rods 36, Fig. 1, with metal clips 37 welded to the plates 31, 4, 51, 6. A second unit comprising sets 7, 8 of deflecting plates is also formed on the support 27 and then slid on to the rods 2. Each set 7, 8 comprises three plates as described in Specification 432,209 and the plates are combined by insulating rods 40 and clips 39 and are secured to plates 9 spaced by rods 36 and engaging the rods 2. The cathode 15, Fig. 12f, may be mounted when the rest of the system is assembled and is carried by a guide 17 sliding into the cylinder 3, connection members 23, 24 for the heater circuit being carried by an insulator 22 secured at 20, 21 to the cylinder 3. In a modification, Fig. 18, the Wehnelt cylinder 3 is carried by two plates 47, 48 and contains a cylinder 52 secured to the guide 17 for the cathode 15. The electrode structure is guided in the tube by rings, the ring 45, Fig. 1, serving also to interceptions. A mica heat-shielding ring 46 is provided at the lower end. All metal parts may be formed of non-magnetic material such as phosphorbronze and are freed from gas by heating in vacuo. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modified cathode structure similar to that shown in Fig. 12f but with the insulator 22 attached to the guide 17. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
