435,502. Cutting- machines. COMPO SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 565, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 15, 1934, No. 23585. Convention date, June 7. [Class 31 (i)] A machine for making a bevelled slash in a rounded sole blank, preparatory to other operations, comprises means for positioning the blank both longitudinally and laterally and a slidably mounted knife for making a cross slash about the ball of the foot at an angle to the blank, the knife being mounted on a clamping member with work engaging means movable normally towards the work. In operation, a blank 30 is adjusted by right or left movable gauges 52, 53 alternately, and a movable toe gauge 40. Knobs 47, 59, connected to the gauges, are adjusted to correspond to the selected sole size. A treadle connected to a rod 73, Fig. 3, is depressed to operate a one revolution clutch. A plunger 69 is removed from a depression 72 clear of a track 70, whereby plungers 66, Fig. 1, are free to press clutch sleeve 65, Fig. 3, towards a rotating pulley 64. Pins 68 enter a recess 67, to drive a sleeve 65. When the motion has carried a cam 71 beyond the plunger 69, the plunger may be released into sliding contact with the cam track, whereby through engagement with cam 71 and entry into depression 72 the clutch sleeve is stopped. During rotation of the shaft 14, cams 15, 16 are carried therewith to press against spring bolts 34, 35, which pressure is transmitted through springs 32, 33 to a clamping lever 28, Fig. 2, so as to bring a presser plate 38 to grip the top of the work. An eccentric 18 is then operative to drive a knife 22 into the stock. The depth of the cut can be controlled by an adjustment screw 24. A toe abutting gauge 40, Fig. 3, for positioning the front of the blank is attached to a slidable rack 41. A pinion 44 is connected by a shaft 45 to an adjusting knob 47 which is calibrated and can be locked in position. The side gauges 52, 53, Fig. 4, are mounted on a common sliding bar 54 connected with a rack 56 operable by a pinion 57 connected to a knob 59. U.S.A. Specifications 1,838,708 and 1,902,725 are referred to.
