436,018. Line markers for roads. FARROW, T., 5, Stockport Road, Ashtonunder-Lyne. May 22, 1934, Nos. 15180, 20661, and 21234. [Class 132 (ii)] Line-marking apparatus comprises a main frame A with road wheels B, a paint container C, a rotary marking brush D, Fig. 1, rotated in the opposite direction to the road wheels, or a spray nozzle D1, Fig. 6, means to transfer the paint from the container to the brush or nozzle, a rotary surface - cleaning brush ahead of the marking brush, and means to drive the two brushes from the road wheels. The line may be continuous or intermittent, white or coloured. Shaft b is driven from the road wheels B through ratchet clutches and is geared to drive the shaft b2: the latter drives the shaft G through chain g1, and the shaft of this brush drives the marking brush D through chain g2. Rollers F, F1 transfer the paint from tank C to brush D. A deflector G1 directs the dirt swept, away from the path of brush D. In a modification, Fig. 3, the tank C and brush D are adjustably mounted upon a frame E which is loosely pivoted about shaft b2. A cam or crank L on shaft b oscillates a lever M about its pivot m so that chain e raises and lowers the frame E, whereby brush D marks a broken line on the road surface. The sweeping brush G is inclined laterally and is mounted in a frame E1 pivoted loosely on shaft b. By means of a hand lever N and chain n, the frames E, E1 may be raised so that brushes D and G are held off the road. In another modification, Fig. 6, the marking brush is replaced by a spray nozzle D1 fed from tank C by air pump P operated by a crank, eccentric, or cam p on shaft b2. For marking a broken line a valve R is opened and closed by eccentric r on shaft b. The paint may be fed to the marking brush by gravity or from a spray, or may be fed to the nozzle D1 by gravity. By placing the brushes outside the road wheels B the apparatus may be used for marking kerbs. The apparatus may be drawn by a horse or vehicle, or self-propelled by a motor.
