[Class 103 (vi)] [See also Group XXXIV] The line axle 1 of rail vehicles is supported by ball or roller bearings 18 mounted in a sleeve 13 built up of three tubular parts 15, 16, 17 permanently secured together such as by welding. The ends 19 of the central part 15 form abutments for the outer races of the bearings. Both wheels 2, 9 may be fast on the axle 1, or, as shown, the wheel 9 may be loose. A boss 5 on the fixed wheel 2 and a collar 23 welded to the axle 1 enter the ends of the sleeve 13 and have lubricant retaining grooves 6, and both wheels have dust-excluding annular flanges 7. Pressed steel saddles 24 for fixing the axle assembly to the vehicle underframe are welded to the sleeve 13.
