Variations in the characteristics or properties of a fluid, e.g. expansion due to increase in ambient temperature, precipitation or separation of one or more components, or the addition of one or more constituents, are determined by passing the fluid through a chamber in which the variation takes place and measuring the pressure of the fluid in the chamber. Temperature variations may be determined by passing air at constant pressure through a small inlet opening into a chamber having a small outlet opening to the atmosphere and measuring the pressure in the chamber by a manometer. The percentage of carbon dioxide in air may be determined by causing the mixture to traverse a potash solution in the chamber.
