[Class 78 (i)] To prevent bridging or arching of the material supplied by a shoot 1 to a hopper 2 for subsequent delivery by the reciprocating ram 4 to a furnace or to a conveyer such as a chain type of mechanical stoker, the walls of the hopper are furnished with a series of reciprocating curtains or screens operated in timed relation to the movement of the ram. Thus, two series of chains 7 connected to cross-bars 8 are suspended by springs 10 and connected at the lower ends by yokes 11 to cross-bars 12 which are connected to the ram 4 bv cabes 13. On the return stroke of the ram, the cables are hauled to pull the chains downwards against the action of the. springs, while on the forward stroke the springs raise the chains. The chains may be moved by gearing.
