In a method for the production of a loose sterile and permanently antiseptic cellulose wad, regenerated by chemical methods from a solution in which the cellulose wad is impregnated throughout its entire thickness, during its manufacture or after-treatment and while it is still moist, without interruption of the operation, with small quantities of germicidal metallic salt solutions, the solution is sprayed on both sides of the wad. Materials such as organic dyestuffs having a toxic or catalytic action on bacteria may be added to the solution.
