456,529. Cash registers. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO., Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. May 10, 1935, No. 13782. Convention date, June 13, 1934. [Class 106 (i)] Differential mechanism.-In a differential mechanism for a cash register or similar accounting-machine having a spring-operated differential member which is adapted, after setting, to be coupled temporarily with means to transmit the differential setting to printing and/or indicating elements, the coupling member is pivoted on the transmitting means and is moved into coupling position by a cam mounted on the axis of the differential and transmitting members. The mechanism is driven by a bail 13 that makes clockwise and counterclockwise excursions during each machine operation. During the clockwise excursion, transmitting discs 17, and the printing and indicating mechanisms to which they are geared, are restored to zero position, and the differential members 15 are rotated by their springs 16 until arrested by the abutment of pawls 26, thereon, with the stems of depressed keys 35 or with stops 36. At the end of the excursion, the transmitting discs are coupled to the differential members by the engagement of levers 18 with teeth 19 of the members, the levers being rocked at this time about their pivots on the transmitting discs by means of cams 21 rotated counterclockwise about the shaft 11. During the counterclockwise excursion of the bail, the differential members are restored to normal position, and carry with them the transmitting discs which transmit the item to the printing and indicating means. Finally, the cams 21 return to the position shown to disable the coupling levers. The pawls 26 are resiliently mounted on the differential members to allow them to wipe past the stems of keys that may have become depressed prior to the return movement of the driving bail.
