N - Chloroazodicarbonamidines such as N - dichloroazodicarbonamidine are prepared by reacting a hydrazo- or azo-dicarbonamidine or salt thereof with a hypochlorite or hypochlorous acid preferably in aqueous solution at low temperatures. The product may be used as a fungicide, germicide, bactericide, antiseptic, disinfectant, preservative, prophylactic or sterilizing agent with or without the addition of sodium phosphates or silicates. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of N-chloro derivatives of oxidants of redox systems as sterilizing agents. Such substances include N - monochloronaphthaquinoneimide, N - di - chloroquinonediimide, N - monochloroquinoneimide, N - monochlorodibromquinoneimide, N - monochloromethylquinoneimide, and N-monochlorodichlorquinoneimide.
