Dec. 3, 1935, No. 33418. [Class 68 (ii)] An L-section or like dam is constructed with means to prevent water pressure bearing on the underside of the horizontal part of the L. The Figure shows in side elevation one of the units of a dam ; it consists of a wall B with two side buttresses E and a foot B1 connected at its toe B2 to a " cut-out " or vertical part C ; beneath the foot B1 is a space D which is freely drained, so that the water pressure on the upper side of the foot B1 is fully effective to maintain the stability of the wall. The wing-like parts F of the edges of the buttresses are jointed, and form spaces between the units as described in Specification 454,402. In a modification, the waterside edges of the buttress-webs E are vertical, and the spaces between the webs are fitted with honeycomb-like partitions forming compartments open to the entry of water. The void D is similarly partitioned. Each face is covered by a protective skin, that on the water face being perforated to give the water access the honeycombed parts behind it.
