[Class 40 (v)] A direction-finding system depends on the changes of current in a fixed tuned vertical aerial when the position of a similar but electrically unconnected aerial changes relative thereto. As shown, a fixed aerial R is connected to a receiver and a mobile aerial is moved round circles centred at R and having radii equal to 0À16#, 0À33#, 0À60#, 0À71# and 0À85#. If O is the distant transmitter, the receiver will indicate a maximum current in the aerial R when the mobile aerial is at the positions C on the first circle, D on the second, X and Y on the fourth. and F on the fifth, while a minimum is registered when the mobile aerial is at the point E on the third circle. The line FEDRC indicates the direction and " sense " of the transmitter O while the line XRY indicates a direction perpendicular thereto. A check may be made by moving the mobile aerial along the bearing line. Five movable aerials may be employed with means for disabling those not in use at any moment. In order to record the directions of the points C, D, E, F, X, Y, a sighting device may be arranged to swing over a compass card at the position R and a trigger which when operated makes a mark on the card. A light rod or cord may join the aerials to maintain their correct distance and give a direct reading of the bearing. The received signals may operate a visible or audible signal in the " maximum " positions or a relay for marking the compass card automatically.
