460,334. Motor vehicles. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Dec. 19, 1935, No. 35225. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1934. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (iv)] Comprises the arrangement in a motor vehicle of a transversely disposed aligned cylinder engine in advance of the front axle or behind the rear axle, with its cylinders inclined towards the middle of the vehicle, and driving the wheels of the axle adjacent thereto through transversely disposed transmission shafts. The cylinders are preferably inclined to the vertical at an angle of about 30‹ and may extend over the wheel axis. In Figs. 4-6, a transverse engine and gear-box unit c, d is shown, mounted behind the rear axle in a forked extension b of a central tubular frame member a, the road wheels being suspended on transverse leaf springs g1, g2 attached to the fork part b which is hollow to accommodate the differential e and the driving axle shafts f1, f2, these passing through openings in the fork arms. The unit is formed with projections h1, h2 resting on rubber cushions on the ends of the fork arms, the engine torque being taken by rubber cushions n1, n2 between the differential and the part b. The radiator i is arranged on one side, above the cylinders and at right angles to the axes thereof, the fan shaft l being driven from an auxiliary shaft m. In a similar arrangement applied to the front end of a vehicle, Figs. 1-3 (not shown), the driving block or unit is trunnioned in rubber bushes in the ends of the fork arms, the trunnion axis preferably passing through the centre of gravity of the unit. In Fig. 8, is shown, swung into one plane, a gear-box d unitary with the engine c and a differential casing e0 flexibly connected thereto by a union x. The drive is transmitted through a clutch o, sliding toothed change-speed gearing dl, d2 and gears r1, r2 to a short cardan shaft s driving the differential e1 through a pinion t, the road wheels being mounted on swingable hollow axles q1. A modification is described in which the sliding toothed change-speed gear is between the clutch and the engine, the differential being mounted in an extension of the gear-box and driven direct by a pair of toothed gears.
