摘要
Resinous products are obtained by oxidizing a drying or semi-drying oil but discontinuing the oxidation prior to substantial coagulation of the oxidized oil and effecting interaction of the oxidized glyceride constituents of the oil with fatty acids containing 14 to 23 carbon atoms. The removal of the unoxidized constituents may be effected before or after treatment with the fatty acid or the fatty acid may be present during the oxidation and unoxidized constituents subsequently removed. Suitable oils include linseed, perilla, rubber seed or soya bean and suitable acids include oleic, tetradecylenic, linolic, linolenic, clupanodonic, palmitic, stearic and ricinoleic acids. The products may be used in the manufacture of enamels, paints, varnishes, lacquers or as binders in moulding compositions such as for linoleum. In examples: (1) linseed oil is oxidized by means of air in the presence of cobalt linoleate, the unoxidized portion extracted by means of petroleum ether and the oxidized constituents, preferably in admixture with toluene, xylene, or naphtha are treated with linseed oil fatty acids in the presence, if desired, of an acid or acid-reacting catalyst such as hydrogen chloride, lactic acid or aluminium chloride; (2) perilla oil is oxidized by means of air in the presence of cobalt naphthenate, reacted with a mixture of palmitic and stearic acids and then treated with petroleum naphtha to remove the unoxidized constituents; (3) a mixture of linseed oil and linseed oil fatty acids is oxidized by air in the presence of cobalt linoleate and then extracted with petroleum ether to remove the unoxidized constituents. Specification 446,658, [Group III], is referred to.
