[Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In drying and conditioning plant of the kind in which the drying &c. medium, such as hot air, is utilized as the means for conveying the material through the plant, a rotary valve for introducing the material intc the pipeline or like part of the system comprises a drum a having its axis parallel to the pipeline c The drum has a plur ality of radial partitions f which form open ended pockets into which the material drops from a hopper e, and from which it discharges by gravity and air-pressure into the pipe c. To permit of direct action of the air on the material the drum is mounted on the pipeline c so as to have no duct between the pockets d and the pipeline, and with the floor of each pocket substantially in alignment with the wall of the pipeline. The floors and partitions f of the pockets d may overhang the ends of the drum proper. A plant lay-out is shown for drying and cooling maize flakes, cold air being sucked through a heater by a fan along a pipe located beneath valves as above, and then down one or more cyclones, with a rotary valve and cold air fan between the cyclones.
