468,256. Stays. THORNHILL, P. W. Feb. 25, 1936, No. 5579. [Class 65 (i)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A folding stay, particularly for use in aircraft undercarriages, comprising members 10, 11 and a jack disposed, when the stay is straightened, substantially at right-angles to the stay and having its two relatively movable parts separately connected to the members, is constructed, so that the means for connecting the extreme inner ends of the two strut members with the jack automatically lock the stay in its folded condition. As shown, a stay comprises members 10, 11 hinged, respectively, by lugs 14, 15 to lugs 18, 19 on a hydraulic jackcylinder 20. The jack-piston 22 is connected through piston-rod 23 and links 26, 27 to the abutting ends of the members 10, 11. Fluid is admitted to or exhausted from the jackcylinder through pipes 32, 34. Due to the fact that the lugs 14, 15 are disposed to one side of the axis 21 and that the links during folding of the stay pass over a dead-centre, the stay is locked in both its extended and retracted positions. The hydraulic jack may be replaced by a mechanical jack which may be operated by a fluid or electric motor. Specification 442,133, [Group XXXIII], is referred to.
