[Class 35] An alternator for generating current impulses as described in the parent Specification has a rotating fieldmagnet with tapering and overlapping polepieces. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the rotor is made in two parts 41, 411 enclosing the winding 18 and with polepieces 211, 2111 shaped as shown so that the crosssection increases rapidly from the top to the root. The stator 7 carrying the armaturewinding 12 is narrower than the space between the roots of the polepieces. The rotor is massively built so as to act as a flywheel as described in the parent Specification. A modification is described.in which the rotor surrounds the stator.
