470,876. Excavators. HAMILTON, C. W. F. April 22, 1936, No. 11511. [Class 68 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In a device for excavating, or raising spoil from the ground, comprising a container rotatable for emptying, and mounted on wheels, at least one of which is adapted to convey spoil from a cutting device into the container, the cutting device is movably mounted on the container or on its draw-bar frame, and is adjustable relatively to the ground without altering the position of the container. A part-cylindrical or other container 1, with outwardly-dished ends, is rotatable on the axle 2 between fixed wheel 3 and normally loose wheel 4. Wheel 4 may be fixed when desired by locking flange 4b, Fig. 3, thereon by spring-pressed pin 4c to a flange 41a keyed to the axle. The axle is connected by frame 6a to a draw-bar 8 slightly offset towards the fixed wheel 3 which has an annular conveyer trough 9 to receive spoil from a cutting device 5, the spoil being deflected into the container by a baffle 10 extending from the latter adjacent an opening which is adjustable as by means of detachable plates. A second baffle 11 on the container deflects loose spoil from the trough to the ground when the container is moved to emptying position. The cutting device is interchangeable and extends diagonally along a recess 1d in the container and is connected thereto by pivot 15 and link 16. A plate 19 fixed to the container or the rear of the cutting device, prevents ingress of boulders &c. An arm 20 on the cutting device has a lateral arm 21 adapted to engage the hooked end 23 of a threaded rod 24 engaging a nut 24c, Fig. 7, in a housing 31 pivoted at 28a; rotation of the rod 24 is prevented by a square plate 24g sliding in a square housing 22, its upward movement being limited by a screw 24k. The nut 24c is rotated by hand or power through shaft 25, universal joints and bevel gear 24d whereby the cutting device is lifted for transport ; in this position, a lever 16a, Fig. 1, engages the link 16 to hold the cutting device which simultaneously, through a chain 13, opens a door 12 through which excess soil may pass from the conveyer trough during transport. A spring 23a normally holds the hook 23 in engagement with the arm 21. For dumping the hook 23 is freed through a lever 29 and chain 28b. Lever 29 also, through slotted connection 35 and link 33 moves a pivoted spring-pulled latch 31 to free a stop 30 on the container so that the latter may be rotated for dumping : simultaneously, the link 33, through a pin 58, Fig. 3, rocks a bellcrank 53 which, through link 51 and spring arm 49, causes a disc 41 to be gripped and retarded, thereby through chain 42 and spring pulled lever 45 causing a clutch band 46 to lock the wheel 4 to the container 1, bell-crank lever 55, Fig. 1, locking the parts in this position. The container is then rotated for dumping on advance of the machine. One or more additional stops 30 are provided for holding the scoop in dumping or spreading position and as these pass the bell-crank lever 55, they move the latter to free the clutch band 46. A plate may be arranged against the inner face of the wheel 3 to prevent loose soil being thrown under the wheel, the plate swinging clear or trailing freely on reversing the machine. The cutting device may include a disc plough and be arranged to move parallel to itself instead of pivoting, or part of the movement may be parallel and the rest pivotal. Further, the upper edges of the container may project beyond the periphery of the wheels so that on bringing such edges against the ground, the container may be filled directly. For cutting into banks &c. an inclined blade may be arranged in front of the wheel 3. Any of the controls may be effected mechanically, hydraulically or electrically or by combinations of such methods. Specification 408,402 is referred to.
