[Class 46] Apparatus applicable for separating coal from wash water comprises a tank 1, Fig. 1, with inclined plates 14 and an inclined bottom 3 formed as a screen up which matter settling thereon is pushed by plates 10 attached to endless chains 8. The tank has an inlet 2 and some of the liquid flows away over a weir 5 while that passing through the screen 3 is collected in a chamber 11 and drawn off by a pump through a pipe 12. The solid matter may be carried further over a screen 6 on the top of a chamber 7 to which suction is applied through a pipe 15. The air current drawn through may be heated so that the solid matter is dried. Longitudinal spacing strips on the screen 3 ensure that a layer of coarse matter is retained thereon to serve as a filter. The inclination of the baffles 14 may be adjustable. Fig. 2 shows modified apparatus in which coarse gauze 16 is provided below each plate 10 to form a tray between each adjacent pair of plates. The trays are formed with side walls 19 and the solid matter is discharged from each tray as a gap is formed when it passes round the guiding rollers 9.
