[Class 109] [See also Groups IX and VIII] A process for the manufacture of threads, strings, bands, films, &c., such as surgical suture material, strings for violins or rackets consists of pressing through nozzles elastin containing and/or collagenous animal fibres in a pretreated condition, i.e. after teasing or swelling and then working - up the extruded material, the fibrous structure of the material being maintained throughout. Animal sinews are fed from a container 1, Fig. 1, through crushing rollers 2, 3, and a teasing machine 4 to a press cylinder 5, the material being extruded through a nozzle 7 which may contain a conveying screw 6. The extruded material is passed successively between rollers 8 which may be heated by steam or electricity, through a loop 9 where it acquires a preliminary twist and through a groove or channel 10 to a device 11 where the twist is completed. The thread or string then passes over a stationary guide 12 to a flyer 13 at which a number of threads may be doubled and finally to aseptic baths 14, 15. In a modification the material may be treated with a swelling agent, e.g. lactic acid in a container 16, Fig. 2, and then passed through crushing rollers 17, a teasing machine 18 and nozzles 19 to a shrinking bath 20 through which it is conveyed by an endless belt 21. The belt 21 may be formed as a sieve. The threads then pass through rollers 22, a drying device 23, a twisting device 24, and a second drier 25, to a flyer 26, and, if desired, a treating bath 27.
