[Class 140] In the surfacing of sheet material in continuous lengths with pigments, varnishes, &c. by the flotation process, the spreading and orientation of the film on the flotation medium is controlled by regulated electric or magnetic potential applied to the film, the flotation medium, or the transfer surface, or to more than one of them. The film may be transferred directly to the web from the flotation medium or indirectly by means of a roller or band &c. As shown in Fig. 2, the pigment &c. is supplied from a dropper 11 and a metal plate 19 on the celluloid wall 16 of the still pool is connected to one pole 26 of a battery, the other pole 21 being connected to an electrode 23 in the bottom of the tank 10. The rotating pattern forming discs 18 also are connected to the pole 26. A rheostat 29 and a reversing switch 30 are provided. As shown in Fig. 4, the transfer roll 31 is connected with the battery pole 26 and is provided with parts of different electric conductivity. As shown in Fig. 5, the pigment &c. is applied to the roller 31 by a series of wicks 40 and thence partly to the flotation medium and partly directly to the web.
