摘要
Polymerized iso-olefines such as polymerized iso-butylene or -amylene having a molecular weight higher than 30,000 are incorporated with rubber, polyethylene sulphide, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, or polymerized butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene. The polymer may be made at very low temperatures, e.g. - 50 or - 100 DEG C., in the presence of a solvent such as purified ethylene, using as catalyst a volatile inorganic halide, e.g. boron fluoride. There may be added during polymerization divinyl acetylene, divinyl benzene, chloroprene, butadiene, acetaldehyde, acetone, phenol, compounds containing the group --CO--C = C--, benzol or indene. Before, during or after polymerization may be added pigments, dyes, fillers, plasticizers or resins, and, preferably after polymerization, a rubber antioxidant. The polymerized product may be separated into fractions having different molecular weights by selective extraction or solution and selective precipitation. A waterproof fabric comprises a thin layer of a mixture of solid iso-butylene polymer, molecular weight 200,000, with raw rubber and plasticizer, interposed between two layers of cloth. A rubber cement is made by mixing a naphtha solution of iso-butylene polymer with a naphtha solution of unvulcanized crzepe rubber; this liquid cement, with the usual vulcanization agents, is used for making dipped goods; or, with paraffin wax, for waterproofing paper, cloth and wood; or is extruded into methyl alcohol to form threads which are spun with textile threads to form elastic threads suitable for weaving into garments. Specifications 434,266, [Group V], and 441,064 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes (1) incorporating the poly-iso-olefines with guttapercha or balata, and (2) adding to the iso-olefines during polymerization vinyl ethers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Polymerized iso-olefines such as polymerized iso-butylene or -amylene having a molecular weight higher than 30,000 are incorporated with rubber, polyethylene sulphide, polyvinyl chloride or acetate, or polymerized butadiene, isoprene or chloroprene.
