503,253. Walls. MCALPINE, SIR M. Nov. 24, 1937, No. 32386. [Class 68 (ii)] The side retaining walls in excavations for trench foundations, basements &c. are constructed by first excavating a plurality of cross trenches 11, strutting or shoring a post 12 against the end of each cross trench, then carrying out the main excavation 10 to a depth less than that of the cross trenches, setting up shuttering 17 between the flanges 13 of posts 12, concreting the recess between the shuttering and the ground 15 to form a wall and thereafter deepening the main excavation and the lateral recess and similarly concreting the deepened portion under the wall. When the main excavation for a basement is completed, the lower ends of the posts are fixed by being embedded in a concrete floor. The faces of the walls may be covered with waterproof material such as asphalte.
