[Class 40 (i)] In order to measure the expansion or contraction of a gas passing through a processing apparatus 2, the rate of flow in the incoming and outgoing pipes 1, 3 is measured by utilizing the difference in pressure in tubes 6, 7 to displace the liquid in the annular chamber 4, the chamber rotating against gravity or spring control, moving a pointer 9 over a resistance 10. The two rates of flow are indicated by galvanometers 12, 13 the current actuating them also passing to the coils of a differential galvanometer 14, which thus indicates the expansion or contraction which has taken place. The scales of galvanometers 13, 14 may be calibrated to allow for changes in density and composition of the gas after passing through the apparatus 2, or an electrical correcting network may be used. Alternatively, the compensation for change in density may be made by a device which determines the density of the gas and is electrically or mechanically coupled to the devices 9, 10 to correct the potential applied to the galvanometers 13, 14. The galvanometer 14 may operate an alarm if the volume change exceeds certain limits and according to the Provisional Specification, a barretter may be inserted in circuit with the resistances 10.
