508,343. Moulding briquettes by rolling-machines. FUEL IMPROVEMENT CO., Ltd. Aug. 26, 1938, No. 25168. Convention date, Aug. 6. [Class 87 (ii)] Pulverulent material, such as coal dust, is briquetted without the aid of a binder by passing the material through a high-speed worm conveyer adjacent a briquetting press so as to increase the bulk density of the material before it enters the press. The worm 2 runs at a speed between 300 and 2500 r.p.m. and is preferably supported only at its rear end, it may be interrupted or may be formed of a number of helical strips or projections. The worm feeds material from the supply conduit 3, through the free space 4 to a press 1 comprising a pair of rolls or of a ring roller type. An adjustable counter pressure is provided on the material by a spring-loaded valve 8 which allows excess material to escape through a pipe 10. The valve 8 may also be loaded hydraulically, magnetically or by a weight. In a modification, Fig. 3, the counter pressure is provided by a spring-loaded piston 12 and excess material is withdrawn through the bucket wheel 14. The degree of compactness of the material may be adjusted by varying the speed of the worm or the counter pressure, or both.
