[Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] In an apparatus for converting electrical oscillations into mechanical oscillations or vice versa, or electrical oscillations of one amplitude into electrical oscillations of another amplitude, which comprises a bar, rod or tube, preferably of exponentially varying cross-section over at least a part of its length, and in which the bar is excited at one end by a medium or circuit in a state of vibration and at its other end transmits the energy to an external medium or circuit, the transmission of energy between the ends is effected by torsional vibrations produced in the bar or the like. As shown in Fig. 1, an exponential bar 1 has its smaller end 2 connected to a coil 5 disposed in a magnetic field indicated at H. The large end of the rod 1 may similarly be associated with an electric circuit. As shown in Fig. 2, the end 11 of the bar 1 is formed with a surface 6 eccentrically disposed with respect to the axis 10 of the bar and in contact with a vibrating medium. The end of the bar is mounted in the hull 7 of a ship by frame members 9 and a rubber support 8. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the large end is formed with two surfaces exposed to the vibrating medium and symmetrically disposed with respect to the axis 10 of the bar.
