516,381. Extracting magnesium. MAGNESIUM METAL CORPORATION, Ltd. (American Magnesium Metals Corporation.) June 24, 1938, No. 18764. [Class 82 (i)] In a process for reducing oxide compounds of magnesium with carbon, in which the reaction products on leaving the reduction chamber are cooled and diluted by inert gas such as hydrogen which is circulated after there has been removed therefrom a quantity of carbon monoxide corresponding to the increment due to that formed in the reduction stage, the products from the reduction furnace 1 are sucked by a blower 12 through a condenser 2, cooler 5, and filter 6, part of the gas mixture then passing through a pipe 8 to a holder 10 and the remainder through a pipe 9 to a cooler 14 and one of a series of preliminary cooled adsorption chambers 16, from which the mixture issuing through a pipe 17 is led to the holder 10. By the adjustment of valves 171, 181, the stream of gases is then directed to a second adsorption chamber 16, while the first is evacuated, the first fraction of gas therefrom being returned to the holder 10 and the remainder, containing about 50 per cent. of carbon monoxide, being led to a holder 26 from which, after the conversion of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide in a plant 30 and the washing out of the carbon dioxide, it is supplied to the condenser 2 through the pipe 3. The plant is started by making water gas in a generator 34 and removing carbon monoxide therefrom in the plant 30. Specification 381,115 is referred to.
