[Class 82 (i)] In the production of alloys by exothermic reaction of a mixture of a reducing agent and a metal compound or ore in presence of a base such as lime, part of the materials are introduced into a container in a molten state and the remainder in a solid state, preheated or not, and the container is rocked or rotated after each charging step so as to cause energetic intermixing, the quantity of each solid addition being small enough to allow solution in the molten portion by means of the heat evolved. The reducing agent may be charged in a molten state followed by solid charges of the other materials, hot or cold, or by a part molten and the remainder solid, hot or cold in one or more stages ; or all or part of the solid reducing agent may be charged into part of the other materials in molten state, followed by the remainder in one or more stages. Examples of the application of the process to the production of ferro chromium and of a manganese alloy high in manganese are described, and the production of calcium - aluminium is also referred to. , French Specification 780,125 is referred to.
