[Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i)] The closure for a coke oven or other heating- apparatus having a number of adjacent retorts or charge chambers 4 comprises an inner heatinsulating cover 5 and an outer gas-sealing cover 9, the inner cover having charging-apertures 7 with separate closures 8, which may be loosely articulated to the outer cover. For charging, the outer cover 9 with the closures 8 is removed by the lifting-device 15, and the inner cover 5 can be removed for repairs &c. The sides of the apertures 7 and the closures 8 are bevelled and the inner cover is formed with expansion joints. Steam or purified distillation products may be supplied under pressure to the space between the two covers to prevent leakage of gas from the retorts, and during the charging- operation distillation gases are 'withdrawn from beneath the cover 5 by fans or ejectors.
