526,435. Timing magnetos. TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENTS, Ltd. (Delord, B.). March 15, 1939, No. 8339. [Class 122 (iii)] A device for use in adjusting the timing of a magneto at a workshop bench apart from the engine comprises a frame 11 having hollow studs 12 and a bearing 15 for a spindle 16. The latter may be clamped to the bearing by a nut 22 on the split screwed boss 21 and carries fixed at its ends coupling elements 17, 19. A scale 23 is carried by the studs 12 and can be locked in any angular position by nuts 24. The coupling element 19 carries a pointer 25 to co-operate with the scale 23 and studs 26 are fitted to the studs 12. When it is desired to replace an old magneto by a new one the old magneto is removed from the engine and the frame is mounted in its place on the existing studs 14 and with the coupling element 17 registering with the magneto drive coupling 18 on the engine. The spindle 16 is locked in this position by the nut 22 and the scale 23 is rotated so that the pointer 25 registers with zero. The framework is then removed and the old magneto is mounted on the studs 26 with the magneto coupling 20 registering with the coupling 19. The spindle 16 is then unlocked and turned until the contact breaker points are just opening when the spindle is again locked and the magneto removed. The new magneto is then mounted on the frame and adjusted until the contacts are just opening. The nut 22 is then released and the spindle rotated to return the pointer 25 to zero. The new magneto is then set and ready to be mounted on the engine. The device may be modified for use with basemounted magnetos.
