[Class 2 (iii)] Paraffins having 5 or more carbon atoms, such as pentane are converted into iso-paraffins by treatment with a catalyst of the Friedel- Crafts type together with a hydrogen halide in such quantity that the partial pressure of the hydrogen halide is at least 1 atmosphere. The treatment is effected below about 150‹ C. Suitable catalysts are the chlorides of aluminium, tungsten, molybdenum, zinc, iron, beryllium and tin. In examples (1) pentane is treated with aluminium chloride in an autoclave at 20‹ C., hydrochloric acid being pressed in to a total pressure of 5 atmospheres; Specification 498,463 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is not limited to the use of Friedel- Crafts catalysts and includes an additional example in which the partial pressures of hydrochloric acid are 1.5, 5.5, and 10.5 atmospheres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
